We chatted to Simon about starring in the highly anticipated production of North by Northwest, presented by Wise Children.
Hi Simon! What can we expect from this stage adaptation of North By North West? We can expect a thrilling and hilarious adventure of mistaken identity, love, betrayal,
war, spies, car chases and maybe even an airplane. A witty whirlwind with a lot of
heart, laughter, dance, jazz music, gripping drama and creative storytelling! And
many revolving doors.
How familiar with the story were you when you got involved with the production? I didn’t know it well at all to be honest, but as soon as I got the audition I watched the
film and straight away was intrigued by how Emma would imagine this piece for
stage, with 6 actors. I just knew it would be so special and exciting!
She’s made an amazing adaption and I am very happy to be part of bringing it to life!
I definitely know Emma’s script better than the film at this point haha, there are also
definitely lots of Easter eggs for anyone who loves the film.
How does it feel to be part of this stage adaptation? For me it’s been a dream to work with Emma and Wise Children since I saw the play Wise Children back in 2018, so I am absolutely buzzing that it’s now happening – a dream coming true! Definitely a milestone in my career and something I’m so grateful and excited to be a part of.
How do you see the character, Valerian? Valerian first seems to be just another “baddie” type character when we first meet him in this play, but I love how complex he is and how much depth we later realise there is to him. He used to be a soft, naive and romantic young man joint to the hip with his first love – Anna. A hard and unfair life then made him tough and traumatised, which led him to make bad choices in the desperate fight for survival. He’s carrying a darkness, he’s feeling stuck in his violent line of work that he has little to no control over, and is also battling unrequited love. I do love the fact that his queerness, that’s clearly present in the film, is explored further in this production. I feel for him, even though I also think he is scary.
What are you most looking forward to about taking North By Northwest on tour? Getting to experience so many amazing cities and gorgeous theatres, playing for
audiences all over the country, learning more and growing as an actor and artist,
making new friendships and most of all telling this absolutely brilliant story!!
