Here’s a guide to some of the films to go and see this month…
Freakier Friday: a bit of harmless nostalgia for those of us who adored Freaky Friday is in store when this sequel is released on the 8th August. This film sees once again complex and fractious relationships between mothers and daughters at the centre of it – with Anna now a mother and about to get married but her daughter is not getting along with her soon to be step daughter – which means that sometimes lightening does strike twice much to the horror of Anna and her mum Tessa.
The Naked Gun: we all know that Liam Neeson can do an action but can he do comedy and action at the same time? Well from what can be seen from the trailer then yes he can – is some of the humour a bit juvenile yes but then that is exactly what the original film taught to us expect and right now we all need a little more silliness in the world!
The Roses: Olivia Coleman and Benedict Cumberbatch star in Jay Roach’s film that explores what happens underneath the facade of a seemingly happy marriage with rising tensions becoming evident as one career rises and the other begins to fall. It is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler.
The Thursday Murder Club: Richard Osman’s best-selling novel is finally heading to Netflix this August. Featuring an all-star cast, the film follows a group of retirees who enjoy examining cold-case murders until one day a real-life murder lands right into their laps….
Materialists: written and directed by Celine Song, this romantic comedy film is set to be released in cinemas on the 15th August. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, following the story of a matchmaker who finds herself caught up in a love triangle between her aspiring actor ex-boyfriend, and a charming millionaire.
