Love London Love Culture’s Book Picks: August 2025

A Beautiful Evil by Bea Fitzgerald: published on the 7th August, this new novel from the author of Girl, Goddess, Queen reimagines the story of Pandora who was made by the Gods for one purpose:  to love and be loved by her new husband, the titan Epimatheos. The problem? He doesn’t seem to want to have anything to do with her. So from here, how does Pandora find meaning in life and discover the reason that she was created?

The Women of Arlington Hall by Jane Healey: set in 1947, Jane Healey’s novel follows the story of Catherine “Cat” Killeen who is set to embark on a brand new life for herself after to cancelling her wedding and upending her future. She finds herself ending up in Virginia, working on a military project which sees her putting her skills in cryptoanalysis to the test to help  rooting out Soviet spies who have infiltrated the US, leading her deeper into the world of espionage.

Picture Imperfect by Jacqueline Wilson: published on the 28th August, Jacqueline Wilson revisits the characters she created for The Illustrated Mum. Dolphin Westward spent her childhood in the shadow of her mum Marigold and now at 33 she seems to be still in her shadows – can she find a way to get out of her rut and forge a new life for herself?

Katabasis by R.F Kuang: from the author of Babel and Yellowface comes a new novel that asks the question as to how far you would go to full fill your dream. It follows the story of Alice who has the goal of becoming the brightest mind in the field of analytic magick – the only problem is the person who can help her dead and – inconveniently – in Hell focing her to unite with her revival Peter Murduch in order to escape Hell which is not quite what it seems. It is set to be published on the 26th August.

Bertie’s theory of Ice Cream: this latest novel in the 44 Scotland Street Novel series is set to be released on the 7th August. As despair for the world grows, it is Bertie’s theory of ice cream that reminds everyone that it is the simple things in life that everyone should hold onto. His life and everyones around them has a lot going on, making this theory even more important!

Wolf Hour by Jo Nesbo: the critically acclaimed author returns with a brand new novel, published on the 14th August.
