We chatted to Nadia about starring in Mike Bartlett’s new play ‘Juniper Blood’ at the Donmar Warehouse.
How does it feel to be starring in Juniper Blood? I keep pinching myself to be honest. The Donmar is a bucket list place to be on at, it was one of the first venues I ever watched theatre at when I first moved to London to study at drama school. I’m really excited to be working with James McDonald, I’ve been following his work for years and to perform Mike Bartlett’s writing is an absolute gift as an actor.
What stood out to you about Mike Bartlett’s play? Mike’s writing is hard not to stand out, he emulates human speech and naturalism with utter precision and intention. He is so clever and understands character so well. What stood out about the play was an extremely intellectual conversation, that as an audience you find yourself engaging with however it’s through emotion, relationships, humour, love and loss that it feels so accessible.
What can you tell us about your character Milly? She’s definitely a handful! Milly is a young girl when we first meet her, she doesn’t quite know herself, she is still coming to grips with all the themes around her that through social media young people are exposed to today, she barks and bites at people as a defence mechanism but I absolutely adore her and feel as though a lot of people may enjoy her company!
How does it feel to be performing at the Donmar Warehouse? It feels very surreal and very exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing what the space demands of me as an actor and hopefully rising to the challenge!
How has it been working on the show so far? So far, it’s been a dream come true. I think it will stay with me forever. I am so inspired by the actors I’m working with, their generosity and talent is very inspiring and I’m looking forward to seeing how the show and characters evolve over the course of the run.
