We chatted to Andrew about starring in the premiere of 13 Going on 30 at Manchester Opera House.

How does it feel to be part of bringing 13 Going on 30 to the stage? I feel so excited to be a part of bringing 13 Going on 30 to the stage. Doing a new musical is always thrilling, and I feel elated that I get to do it with one of my FAVOURITE films!
What made you want to be part of the show? I wanted to be a part of this show because I am such a fan of the film. I grew up on this film, and I am a huge fan of the rom-com genre. I think what sets this story apart from so many other rom-coms, is that it has real human moments. I was speaking with one of our writers, Cathy Yuspa (Who also co-wrote the film with Josh Goldsmith) about the scene towards the end of the film when Jenna finds Matt as he is preparing to marry Wendy. I think that scene is so important because as an audience we are rooting for Jenna to get the guy, but the human reality is that he’s about to walk down the aisle to marry someone else! I love that in this fantastical premise of a story, there are so many real moments like this.
How have rehearsals been going so far? Rehearsals have been fast and furious! We are currently in our preview period, which means we rehearse in the day and perform at night. Then our brilliant creative team meets after the show and discusses how we can improve the show, and we come in the next day and implement changes and “fixes” to give audiences the best show possible. It’s been really fun to see how the show evolves!
What can audiences expect from the show? Overall, audiences can expect a fun, uplifting night out at the theatre. You will be able to see the film you love live on stage, but told through a fresh new lens! The music by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner elevates this incredible story while Jennifer Webbers dynamic choreography really makes the show feel so current! And of course, our director Andy Fickman is the king of making a beloved film work so well onstage! Yall are in for a TREAT!
What can you tell us about your character you play?
My character, Kyle Grandy, is so fun to play. He is full of energy, boisterous, and, albeit, a bit obnoxious. But most of all, I think Kyle is a great reminder to audiences that middle school will pass, everything is temporary and most of the time, those who bully others get their karma in the end…whether they know it or not!
How would you describe 13 Going on 30?
I would describe 13 Going on 30 the Musical as a fun, heartwarming trip to the theatre. It appeals to literally everyone! It’s a great date night, perfect for families, or even those who want a little solo trip to a new musical! The show is full of laughs, every song is a bop, and you will leave the theatre feeling thirty, flirty and thriving!
