The debut album from the singer is filled with confidence and fabulous vocals – but occasionally feels as though it plays it a little safe on occasion.
This debut album from Perrie Edwards is filled with confidence and honesty lyrically – but it is also an album that is about growth and moving forward, making it completely relatable to her fans.
The singer’s album gets off to a cracking start with the song ‘Forget About Us’ which is simply a great pop song, that really showcases the confidence that she has in releasing this album.
‘Perrie’ is a record that is filled with great pop sounds, fabulous vocals and songs that get to the heart of the contrasting feelings that come with relationships. The transition between the tone and emotions that come across throughout the album is intriguing to hear.
Early tracks such as ‘If He Wanted to He Would’ and ‘Rocket Scientist’ has hints of cynicism, bleakness to them. There is also a razor sharpness to the lyrics all wrapped into a catchy pop sound that keeps the listener invested.
This then transforms into something more romantic and tender, with tracks such as ‘Where You Are’ highlighting a change in fortunes romantically and a more optimistic stage in life. Both songs are very sensitively sung and highlight the purity of her vocals. Elsewhere, ‘Miss You’ is where she sounds at her most vulnerable which makes the listener sit up and pay attention.
At sixteen tracks, there is a lot to be taken in here and perhaps it could have been condensed more to make a more concise album and left room for another album. The majority of the tracks are well constructed and perfectly placed pop – but there is an element that by half way through that it begins to feel a little bit safe. It would be lovely to see what she could do with her vocals and an even bolder range of sounds.
One of the most interesting tracks on the album is ‘Bonnie & Clyde’, which uses the story of the infamous couple as a way of focusing on how love can become a dangerous obsession and the lengths one would do for the other person. It adds a powerful and darker side to the album that is intriguing to listen to.
Other highlight songs on the album include album closer ‘Goodbye My Friend’ that along with ‘Some Place, Different View’ have a very sensitive and heartfelt vibe to them that hit instantly in the heart.
Overall, it is a very strong first album and it will be interesting to see what Perrie does with her next album.
