We chatted to the director about the upcoming London run of ‘I Was A Teenage She-Devil’ heading to The Other Palace from the 2nd April.

Hi Rachel, how does it feel to be bringing ‘I Was a Teenage She-Devil’ to London?
I’m thrilled to be returning to London with ‘I Was a Teenage She-Devil.’ It’s such a fantastic show, one that’s very dear to my heart, a piece of theatre that is truly worthy of moving forward and having a larger life. I’m deeply grateful for our audiences at Fringe, whose cult-like love of our show has been a major catalyst in moving it forward.
What can London audiences expect from the show?
A whole lot of hairspray, spandex, in your face rock ‘n’ roll, and of course, the Devil in the flesh! The show is a loud, outrageous, electric burst of energy, but it’s also a sincere story about finding the courage to be your true self and forge your own path.
How have you found the experience of working on bringing this story to life?
I’ve been working on the piece with the writer, Sean Whiteford, for quite some time, but of course concerts and readings can’t reveal to an audience the full feeling of any show. At Fringe I was able to get in there and explore the storytelling from a visual and choreographic perspective. In bringing it into London, I’ll be able to expand the stylistic vocabulary of the show, as the decade of the ’80s is almost its own character.
What was it initially that made you want to get involved with the show?
I mean, it’s a 1980s rock ‘n’ roll horror-musical-comedy, so essentially everything about the show made me want to be on board. It’s ridiculously funny, sharply witty, and a true love letter to ’80s teen movies, horror movies, and the authentic music of the era. It takes these adjacent genres and intertwines them in a way that I find earnest and refreshing.
What excites you the most about ‘I Was a Teenage She-Devil’?
I’m excited to share this deeply fun, over the top story with the world. It’s a whirlwind of a show, and its been a whirlwind of a journey to come to this point. I’m honored to be at the helm, and I can’t wait for our London audience to experience this show, with all of its delicious excess.
