This fascinating and immersive exhibition will delight all those with an interest in ancient history.

Ramses and the Pharaohs’ Gold is a real treasure trove of discovery, with 180 authentic objects from the fascinating era of Ramses the Great (or Ramses II depending on how you refer to him) and beyond.
Featuring an incredible 180 objects spanning from coffins and jewellery to statues and mummified animals, this is an incredibly immersive exhibition from start to finish – even concluding a VR experience right at the very end. The way in which it has been curated and designed really makes the visitor feel as though they are stepping into the world of Ramses II and that of his people.
Each object has been carefully selected and loaned by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities and it is really worth getting the audio guide as you pick up many fascinating facts about specific objects along the way, featuring the voices of curators passing on their knowledge and visitors are also guided through the narration of Dan Snow.
The way in which the exhibition has been set out makes it feel like it takes visitors on a real journey through Ancient Egypt, while also highlighting the legacy of Ramses and what he achieved during his reign from builder to warrior, you are never left in any doubt of his acheivements. It has a strong sense of storytelling but without getting heavy handed to overwhelm people, with snippets of texts that have been concisely written.
Of course one of the highlights is seeing Ramses’s coffin as well as a spectacular statue of the ruler displayed in full glory on the following section. Visitors can also be dazzled by the exquisite jewellery on display that was created with expert craftmanship , while the way in which the battle of Kadesh is brought to such vivid life is brilliantly done.
Knowing that every object that is on display is authentic is a real thrill, ensuring that you are experiencing history as close as possible – the attention to detail is incredible. Equally, the way in which the exhibition has been divided into the first half focusing on Ramses himself, before the other half focusing on after his death at the age of 92 ensures that this is a very comprehensive exhibition that ties everything together beautifully.
There is so much to take in that it is certainly worth a second visit to ensure that you absorb everything it has to offer. Particular standout cases on display include the funerary mask of King Shoshenq II and the gold objects that were buried with the deceased and the coffin of King Shoshenq II also highlighting the respect and reverence for the dead the Ancient Egyptians had and preparing loved ones for the afterlife.
Overall, this is an exhibition that knows how to dazzle and be informative at the same time. Take a real step into history and go and pay a visit to Ramses and the Pharaohs’ Gold – you won’t regret.
