This new album from the tenor showcases a different side to his musical abilities that has some surprises along the way.

In a departure from what fans have come to expect from him, Alfie Boe has released a refreshing album of mainly new songs that offers a different perspective of what we can expect from him musically.
Whether it is the more country vibes of ‘Meanwhile Gardens’ or the title track, this is a record that really comes across as deeply personal and that a lot of care and attention has been put into it.
In particular, ‘Face Myself’ and ‘Guiding Light’ feel as though there is deep introspection to be found, offering a lot of soul searching that makes the listener sit up and pay attention. But these tracks among others offers a softer side to Boe’s voice which as we know is extremely awe inspiring in its power.
Elsewhere, it is impossible to resist the way in which songs such as ‘Ten Thousand Miles’ and ‘Trying to Find a World That’s Been and Gone Part 1’ soar, showcasing the depth and range that Boe is able to apply particularly to songs that clearly mean a lot to him.
Yet, on the other side of this it does feel slightly tentative in places, with songs such as ‘The Night Will Always Win’ and ‘Have a Little Faith in Me’ which although sincere in intention, just feels a little bit repetitive for my taste.
This being said, it is also difficult to not enjoy songs such as ‘Avignon’ and ‘Stop Light’ that show a confidence and willingness to experiment with his sound. In particular, ‘Stop Light’ with its little bit more rock infused sound that makes it a really refreshing song to listen to.
Overall, this is a record that has plenty to surprise and please fans, perhaps signalling a new era for Alfie Boe.
