The singer’s fourth solo album is bold and intriguing from start to finish.
Ok so first of all I realise that I’m a bit late to the party when it comes to taking a listen to this new album from Harry Styles but has it been worth the wait to listen to? In a word yes.
Since embarking on his solo career, Styles has never been afraid to experiment with his sound. There is always something unique, distinctive and yes artistic in a way that is lacking in many ways in the music industry.
There is a real boldness on display throughout – such as the intriguingly experimental ‘Aperture’ which admittedly takes a little time to get used to in terms of its sound but sets the tone of the album well. Highlighting the fact that nothing is really truly out of bounds for Styles musically.
Particular standout tracks includes ‘American Girls’ which has a wonderful poetic quality to it that makes it irresistible to listen to, while ‘Ready, Steady Go!’ takes the album off into a completely different direction with its bold and funky sound. This is certainly an album in which to expect the unexpected.
In contrast to this, there is a real beautiful quality to ‘Coming Up Roses’ that really captures the attention with its wistful quality that is also deeply reflective. This is a real highlight of the album as it offers a completely different side as to what Styles is capable of as does ‘Paint By Numbers’ which is equally introspective.
Album closer ‘Carla’s Song’ is a pitch perfect way to close the album with its vibrancy, matched perfectly with ‘Dance No More’. Both songs capture the sense of fun and album on the album – despite covering different aspects of the music industry.
There are a couple of tracks that don’t quite work but this is an album that consistently takes risks and for the most part these risks pay off. Key examples of this are ‘Pop’ and ‘Taste Back’ that highlight the artistry that Harry Styles has applied to this record. By taking a break from releasing records, he has certainly expanded his horizons and outlook that is on full display here.
Throughout it all, it is clear that Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally covers a range of themes that mean a lot to Styles which in part explains why it is such an intriguing listen: it feels as though it comes from a deep place of insight. But it is also entertaining, playful and in many ways a joy to listen to.
