We chatted to Sorrel about her lates album Creeping Thyme, whgich is set to be released on the 23rd October.
Hi Sorrel, how does it feel to be releasing your second album?
Incredibly exciting! This album is everything I imagined it could be and more. I’ve been enjoying listening back to it since we recorded it in Norfolk in Spring/Summer, and I’m so proud of every song and how they’ve turned out. Now I’m ready for everyone else to hear them!
What can people expect from Creeping Thyme?
I wanted this album to have a ‘rootsy’ Americana feel, taking influence from both old American and British folk music, and I certainly feel that the band and I have achieved that. It’s a collection of songs that feel like ‘home’ to me. The album speaks of the longing to find your feet in this world, to find what makes you feel settled, and reflects on the journey I’ve taken to get there, along with the people and places that have shaped me and influenced my writing.
Learning from nature and the changing seasons has taught me to love the simplest things and to stay resilient through life’s strife. Creeping Thyme felt like a fitting title, as the folklore surrounding this ancient wild herb speaks of courage, protection, peace, and the magic and memory of old ways.
How did the idea for the album come about?
After the release of my debut album, Lost En Route, in Autumn 2024, and the wonderful feedback and acclaim it received, I was a little nervous about where to start with album two. So I didn’t put too much pressure on myself. I didn’t have a plan or a theme; instead, I let the songs come as they did, whenever inspiration took hold, and slowly but surely, the album pieced itself together.
I spent last winter mostly cosy in front of my fire in my converted horse lorry, finishing off the songwriting and realising that the songs shared recurring themes: home, learning from nature, resilience and finding peace.
With the help of some wonderful artists, photographers and designers, I’ve created artwork to match the earthy, folky tones of the album.
Are there any particular songs on the album that really resonate with you deeply?
Ran Jonny Ran is a deeply personal song. Released as the first single from the album, it’s an emotional story about a loved one searching for meaning, searching for something when life got hard, but looking in all the wrong places. It tells of the heartache and sadness experienced during that difficult time.
What are you most looking forward to about releasing this album?
I cannot wait to have the physical copies on CD, released in October 2026, and vinyl, coming in Spring 2027. I’m excited to see the hard work that my band, I, and my wonderful team of artists, friends and supporters have put in out in the world.
I’m just excited for as many people as possible to hear these songs, resonate with them and enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed writing them — and now enjoy performing them.
I’ll be going on tour this Autumn to promote the new album, so I’m really looking forward to playing all these songs live with my band across the UK.
