PREVIEW: Norma @English National Opera

The English National Opera are to present Bellini’s Bel canto masterpiece Norma for the first time in its history for seven performances only. 

Bellini’s masterpiece will be performed in a staging by Christopher Alden, which was first seen at Opera North in 2012.

A close-knit community’s way of life is threatened by unstoppable change. The people want war. Their priestess Norma, secretly in love with one of the enemy, resists. But now he has a new love. And in the face of his betrayal, it seems Norma is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Running at the London Coliseum from the 17th February to the 11th March, Norma sees Christopher Alden directing his sixth production for the English National Opera.

The creative team includes: set designer Charles Edwards, costume designer Sue Willmington and lighting designer Adam Silverman. The production will be conducted by Stephen Lord, having previously conducted Rigoletto, La bohème and Tosca for ENO.

Meanwhile, the cast will include Marjorie Owens making her UK, ENO and role debut in the title role, Jennifer Holloway, Peter Auty, James Creswell, Valerie Reid and Adrian Dwyer.
