The new cast for the hit London production of Disney’s classic animated film will start performances from next month.
As well as changes in the ensemble cast, Disney Theatrical Productions announced that Nicholas Afoa is to take on the role of Simba at the Lyceum Theatre.
Afoa has already appeared in the Australian production of the musical between 2013-2016, performing more than 860 times during that time. This opportunity will bring him to the London stage for the first time. He will be taking part in performances from the 10th May.
Other new members of the cast include: Etian Almeida, Jonathan Andre, Janique Charles, Zinhle Dube, Sandile Gontsana, Kwesi Jeffers, Stephanie Lo, Sadia McEwen, Khaya Maseko, Daniel Monteiro, Nosipho Nkonqa, Dominique Planter, Antoine Murray-Straughan, Kayode Salina and Ricardo Walker.
The Lion King is currently in its 17th year in London and has entertained over 13 million visitors since it opened at the Lyceum theatre on the 19th October 1999. It is currently the sixth longest running show in the West End.
At its heart is the powerful and moving story of Simba – the epic adventure of his journey from wide-eyed cub to his destined role as King of the Pridelands.
The hit musical is directed by Julie Taymor, with music and lyrics by Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice. Other members of the creative team include: Michael Curry, who designed the masks and puppets with Taymor, Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design) and Michael Ward (hair and makeup design).
During its time on the global stage, the production has won over 70 awards – including six Tony Awards as well as two Olivier Awards.
