PREVIEW: Oedipe, Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House will present the UK premiere of  Spanish director Älex Ollé and Argentine director Valentina Carrasco’s production of Oedipe, the only opera by Romanian composer George Enescu.

Oedipe is destined to murder his father and marry his mother. His parents arrange for his murder but instead he is raised as a prince of Corinth. Discovering the prophecy, he flees Corinth – only unwittingly to kill his true father and marry his mother.

This production of the opera originally premiered at the La Monnaie, Brussels in 2011. It now comes to London and marks the Royal Opera debuts of Co-directors Älex Ollé and Valentina Carrasco. They will return to open the 2016/2017 season with a new production of Norma.

British conductor Leo Hussain will also be making his Royal Opera debut with Oedipe, played by  Johan Reuter.English soprano Sophie Bevan, Sarah Connolly, John Tomlinson ,  Samuel Youn and Marie-Nicole Lemieux are all in the cast. Meanwhile, other cast members include: Claudia Huckle, Nicolas Courjal,Alan Oke,  Hubert Francis, Stefan Kocan,  In Sung Sim and Samuel Dale Johnson.

The creative team for the production includes: set designs by Alfons Flores, costume designs by Lluc Castells and lighting design by Peter Van Praet.
