With Aladdin opening in the West End next week, Love London Love Culture can’t help but wonder what will be the next Disney film to be turned into a musical?
1. Frozen – if this isn’t turned into a musical at some stage then it will be very surprising. One of the biggest Disney films to hit our screens in years, it has had little girls singing along to a certain song and turning the principle of needing a handsome prince to save you on its head. The music itself – particularly ‘Let it Go’ has a very musical vibe to it and it would be interesting to see how it would work on stage. Although some elements will be difficult to replicate…
2. The Jungle Book – now given the popularity of the reboot live film, there is still a massive fondness for the Jungle Book, and while it might be difficult to replicate for the stage, the music is some of the best that has been created for a Disney film and it would be a shame not to see it on stage in the future.
3. The Little Mermaid – again, yes it would be difficult to replicate the under the sea moments and bringing it to life, but it could be incredible if the right people were involved and with the technology available these days – anything is possible.
4. Mulan – for something completely different, Mulan would be another visual treat and a tale of courage that would inspire many audiences on stage as it has on film. Yes it is probably much grittier than the other suggestions, and the battle scenes would have to be carefully thought out but it would certainly look impressive on stage.
Some might happen, some might not – but there is plenty of imagination in Disney’s films that will continue to inspire spectacular theatre!
