NEWS: All Star Cast Announced for The Color Purple in Concert

It has been announced that an all-star cast has been announced for a one night only concert performance of The Color Purple taking place at the Cadogan Hall on the 21st May.

This special concert performance is taking place to raise money for The British Theatre Academy, a performing arts programme that has nurtured the talent of thousands of young performers over the past 30 years.

The Color Purple is the story of a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world.

It was confirmed today that the cast for this special concert will include: Wendy Mae Brown (Ghost the Musical;Kiss Me Kate; Porgy and Bess) , Cavin Cornwall (Aladdin, Jesus Christ Superstar), Tyrone Huntley (Dreamgirls, Jesus Christ Superstar) , Rachel John (The Bodyguard, Memphis, The Lion King) , Hugh Maynard (Miss Saigon, The Lion King), Seyi Omooba (Junkyard, Ragtime)  and Marisha Wallace (Dreamgirls, Something Rotten!).

The creative team for the concert includes musical direction by James Taylor, choreography by Mykal Rand and is produced by Matthew Chandler and Danielle Tarento.

This concert performance is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker (and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film) spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story.

With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life.

The original musical features a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. It originally premiered on  Broadway on 1 November 2005. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2006, including ‘Best Musical’, ‘Best Book’, and ‘Best Original Score’. Recently the  production at The Menier Chocolate Factory transferred to Broadway winning two Tony Awards – ‘Best Revival Of A Musical’ and ‘Best Leading Actress in a Musical’.
