With previews beginning next week, Love London Love Culture attended the musical’s launch to celebrate its return to London. Here’s why we think that you should pop along to the Phoenix Theatre…

1. Ruthie Henshall as Mama Morton: having previously played both Roxie and Velma in the show, Henshall returns to the musical to play Mama Morton and becoming the only British actress to have played all three leading roles. She originally played Roxie in the original London production in 1997, before returning to play Velma and she then went on to play both roles on Broadway as well.

2. Chicago has turned 21: celebrating its long run on Broadway, it seems the perfect way to celebrate the musical’s anniversary by bringing it back to the capital, following its UK and international tour – proving that a musical about crime and murder never truly goes out of style.

3. Any excuse to listen to John Kander and Fred Ebb’s music and lyrics: there is no denying the universal appeal of Kander and Ebb’s songs and score – which is sexy, sophisticated and always memorable. Songs such as ‘All That Jazz’, ‘Cell Block Tango’ and ‘When You’re Good to Mama’ really fit into the story with plenty of sass and humour that it is always a delight to listen to.

4.  A chance to see the original Broadway choreography by Ann Reinking (in the style of Bob Fosse): the key element of Chicago is its choreography which matches the sharp and contemporary style of the musical as well as the violent nature of the story. It is definitely one of the best choreographed musicals.

5. It has won numerous awards including six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy proving that it has the ‘Razzle Dazzle’: having won so many awards, it is a testament to the show that it still feels fresh and vibrant today even though it has been going on for 21 years. Check out what Love London Love Culture thought when the show toured here.

Chicago will play at the Phoenix Theatre from the 26th March and is currently booking until the 6th October 2018. To book tickets click here or visit: Encore TicketsTicketmaster.co.ukSee Tickets.comATG Tickets,  Theatre Tickets Direct.co.uk ,Love Theatre.com and From the Box Office
