Love London Love Culture’s Romantic Playlist: 2021

With Valentine’s Day upon us, Emma Clarendon (with assistance of her friends) selects 10 songs that should be on your romantic playlist….

How Long Will I Love You – Ellie Goulding: delicate but heartfelt, Ellie Goulding’s song is a real must-listen to on Valentine’s Day. It feels genuine and never over the top, thanks to the lyrics that suggest that you really can’t measure the depth of love that a person feel for another. Gorgeously romantic.

Marry Me – Jason Derulo: this very contemporary love song is very uptempo but it never undermines the lyrics, so still manages to sound sincere. An immensely enjoyable song.

Perfect – Ed Sheeran: some of the best love songs are beautifully simple – and this is showcased in this beautiful song that is one of my favourites (and was one of the first discussed when asked for help compiling this list with my friends). Everything about it just sums up romance and love perfectly.

Wasn’t Expecting That – Jamie Lawson: if I’m being honest this was a song that I hadn’t heard of until a friend suggested that I included it. But I instantly fell in love with it as it takes you on a real journey through a relationship (highlighted even more in the absolutely perfect video to accompany it). I will certainly have this song on repeat now!

Rule the World -Take That: this song just soars and the lyrics take a wonderfully poetic approach to love and romance – it has to be said it is one of my all time favourite songs.

Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol: I don’t know why but I have certainly had this song in my head/ playing this song a lot recently. It is not your typical love song but it just seems to really stand out for me.

All of Me – John Legend: I love the real simplicity of this song – its about loving someone in every way – flaws and all – and isn’t that something that we all want? Songwriting at its best.

Mirrors – Justin Timberlake: this song also stands out for me because it shows that love has to be a two way street – there are good times but also the bad times that you have to go through. But just as importantly how you love someone else is a true reflection of yourself. It highlights the complexities of love beautifully.

Last Request – Paolo Nutini: we all need someone to hold onto and I just really love the lyrics to this song. It’s all about just having someone to hold onto and have that closeness to or even that longing to have someone to hold onto which really speaks out to me. A genuinely beautiful song.

You and Me – Lifehouse: while I fell in love with the song thanks to the BBC show Gavin and Stacey, something about the lyrics just feel really perfect in the way it expresses emotion – it is a song that I have on constant repeat at the moment.
