Love London Love Culture’s Film Picks: January 2025

Start the new year right by paying a trip to the cinema to catch one of these upcoming new films…

Maria – released 10th January 2025: Pablo Larraín’s latest film following on from Jackie and Spencer, focuses on the life of renowned opera singer Maria Callas. As well as Angelina Jolie in the title role, the cast also includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Haluk Bilginer.

The Brutalist – released 24th January 2025: already receiving critical acclaim, Brady Corbet’s new film follows the story of Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth from being forcibly separated from his wife during world war II and his experiences as an immigrant living in America. The film stars Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce and is set to be one of the must-see films of the year.

A Complete Unknown – released 17th January 2025: Timothée Chalamet is already receiving praise for his performance as Bob Dylan in this new musical biopic directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line). The story follows Dylan’s journey rising acclaim as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts. The film also stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, and Monica Barbaro.

Babygirl – released 10th January 2025: written and directed by Halina Reijn, this new thriller explores the complexities of power dynamics and sexuality as CEO Romy (Nicole Kidman) embarks on a dangerous affair with intern Samuel (Harris Dickinson).

Nickel Boys – released 3rd January 2025: based on the 2019 novel by Colson Whitehead, this critically acclaimed film finally heads to UK cinemas early next year. This drama film recounts the story of Elwood and Turner, who are sent to an abusive reform school called the Nickel Academy in 1960s, with the film being inspired by the  the historic reform school in Florida called the Dozier School for Boys, which was notorious for abusive treatment of students. It is certain to win plenty of awards throughout the awards season….

We Live in Time – released 1st January 2025: set to be an emotionally powerful and beautiful film, We Live in Time has been directed by John Crowley from a screenplay by Nick Payne. It centres on a relationship over the course of 10 years – but told in a non traditional way and stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.
