Review Round Up: The Naked Gun (2025)

The Guardian: **** “The new Naked Gun has the look and feel of an 80s LA action movie, with sense-memories of Beverly Hills Cop and Terminator. The first rush of Frank and Beth’s romance is represented by an uproariously extended winter-sports-themed pop video of the sort beloved by Wham! fans. There is no reason for this new Naked Gun to exist other than the reason for the old ones: it’s a laugh, disposable, forgettable, enjoyable.”

Empire: **** “Neeson is superb at wink-free deadpan comedy and leads from the front, the entire ensemble matching him.”

The Telegraph: **** “The legacy sequel is so hilarious it made me physically crumple in my seat.”

IGN.com: “The Naked Gun is unlikely to overshadow the cop-movie spoofs that inspired it: Liam Neeson tries his damnedest, but is slightly too steely as the moronic Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr., and most of the big laughs are just modern-day variations on jokes first told in the 1980s (if not earlier). But just because there’s a bit of must on them doesn’t mean that they’re not funny – and considering the relatively deserted theatrical comedy landscape of 2025, Akiva Schaffer’s faithful, unapologetically dumb Police Squad! update plays like a big, refreshing gulp from the seltzer bottle.”

Roger Ebert.com: *** “Overall, there’s a timeless quality to the best jokes in “The Naked Gun” that makes them feel of a piece with the lines in the original without being direct copies. They don’t all work, but there are so many of them packed into this film’s blissfully short runtime (under 85 minutes) that every one that lands with a thud is followed by one that connects.”

Deadline.com: ” The Naked Gun also gives us hope Hollywood hasn’t forgotten how to laugh. It just simply has to go back in time to find its lost funny bone.”

The Upcoming: **** “Naturally, comedy is entirely subjective, and whether some viewers may see The Naked Gun as all downright stupid is a very real possibility, but ridiculous is what the Police Squad do best, and that is what we are here for. You must go into the cinemain the right mindset and be fully aware of what this franchise stands for, then you will have a raucously good time.”

Den of Geek: “There is, again, that sense of desperation in a movie that appears only too eager to try any joke, some of which were dated back when Austin Powers 2 did them more than a quarter-century ago. So I cannot bring myself to quite rave about the new Naked Gun, even when heartily recommending it to anyone in need of a good laugh these days, no matter how nakedly shameless it might really be.”

Radio Times: **** “Make no mistake, this is a near 90-minute hoot that bodes well for more to come, a gun that feels like it still has several bullets to fire.”

The Naked Gun is out in cinemas now.
