Here’s a guide to some family theatre you might want to book to see this year…
Who Let the Gods Out, Polka Theatre:
Playing at the Wimbledon based theatre until the 22nd March, this production is based on the first book of Maz Evans‘s series. It follows the story of Elliot who has to save the world with the help of some Greek Gods. Suitable for those aged 8-13, its a great way to find out more about Greek mythology in a fun and adventurous way!
This family favourite musical is embarking on a brand new tour this year, opening at the New Wimbledon Theatre on the 23rd May. Following the story of orphan Annie on her journey to finding a family – with no help from Miss Hannigan, it includes songs such as ‘Tomorrow’ , ‘Easy Street’ and ‘It’s the Hard Knock Life’ . The cast will include La Voix and Claire Sweeney as Miss Hannigan on certain dates.
This new musical based on the bestselling book series from Dav Pilkey, the creator of Captain Underpants and Cat Kid Comic Club will run at the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall from the 29th July until the 16th August. The story follows that of best friends George and Harold who have been creating comics for years but now want to take it to the next level by creating a muscial based on their favourite character Dog Man.
Paddington the Musical, Savoy Theatre:
Everybody’s favourite bear now has his very own show in the West End! While tickets are selling like hotcakes (or as popular as marmalade sandwiches are in the Peru bear community), it is still recommended that if you can to book a ticket. It is based both on Michael Bond’s beloved book series as well as the first film and features some wonderful songs by Tom Fletcher. Catch up with our review here.
With Julia Donaldson recently announcing the third book in The Gruffalo series, fans of the original book will be happy to hear that the stage adaptation of the book will return to the West End this summer. It will play at the Lyric Theatre from the 17th July until the 8th September.
Matilda: the Musical, Cambridge Theatre:
Now celebrating 15 years in the West End, this much loved musical based on Roald Dahl’s book continues to run in London. Featuring music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, it brings to life the story of a little girl with extraordinary powers!
Toto the Ninja Cat and the Great Snake Escape, Little Angel Theatre:
Dermot O’Leary’s book heads to the stage at the Little Angel Theatre from the 17th May until the 19th July. It follows the story of Toto who might look like an ordinary cat but she has an important job to do – she is a ninja warrior cat, going out on daring missions with her brother Silver.
