While the singer has said that she won’t return to the music industry and has sold the rights to her music catalogue, we can’t help but revisit some of our favourite songs that she released…
Sometimes:
There is such a vulnerability and bearing of emotions on this song that Britney just performs with great feeling and insight that is hard to resist. Years on, you sit up and listen to this song and realise that everything she sings in this song is still relatable to someone being in love but unable to express themselves. It is a classic.
Born to Make You Happy:
The sheer confidence and rawness in which she performs this song is incredible. Her gift was (and could still be if she wanted to) to provide performances of songs that many people no matter what their backgrounds are and ensures that they are completely relatable.
Overprotected:
It is interesting that this song is all about breaking free from control and trying to celebrate the person that she is given what happened in regards to her conservatorship is a really fascinating and empowering to listen to. A real anthem for independence.
Dear Diary:
As a teenager this song perfectly related to my various feelings on the crushes I had and it still remains one of my favourite Britney songs. Is it cheesy lyrically? Yes but it is also filled with wonderful sentimentality that makes it an enjoyable listen.
My Prerogative:
Another brilliantly challenging song that is aimed at the media and living her life on her own terms, My Prerogative is gloriously rebellious and fierce that feels consistently empowering.
I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman:
It is hard to resist the sheer vulnerability and uncertainty at a certain time in life that comes through on this song. I love the idea that the song captures the moments in which you are aware that you are in a transition in your life – particularly if it is in an important time in your life whether that is a transition from being a teenager to a woman or trying to find your way to who you are supposed to be.
Piece of Me:
Here as in so many of her songs as her career progressed, Britney took a more autobiographical approach to the music that she chose to perform. It really works as a song to confront media intrusion and public judgement that still holds up to this day.
