The film is based on the story of Ramla Ali, a Somali refugee who, without her family’s knowledge, became the first Somali British female professional Muslim boxing champion.
It has been announced that double Emmy and triple BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated director Anthony Wonke’s new film ‘In the Shadows’ is set to be released in UK cinemas via True Brit on the 30th October.
The film follows the story of Ramla Ali who went on to make history as the first non-track and field athlete to compete for Somalia in the Olympic Games, and strived to find her own identity in spite of the world she was born into.
‘In the Shadows’ stars BAFTA-winning, Jasmine Jobson (Bird, Top Boy, Creep) as the lead role of Ramla Ali, with Finn Cole (Sirius, Last Breath, Peaky Blinders) supporting as her husband, Richard Moore, and Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (The Man in My Basement, The Gentleman, Andor) as Clinton, Ramla’s coach. Other key cast playing Ali’s family include Hodan Yusuf, newcomer Suhayla Ahmed, Roda Asha Aden, Mustafa Aden, Moe Hashim (Urchin, Ted Lasso, Those About to Die), and Samater Ahmed.
BAFTA-winner and Oscar-nominated producer Lee Magiday (The Favourite, The Lobster) of Sleeper Films, and Madeleine Sanderson (Mouth Full of Golds) of Affine Films have produced the film.
