This latest album from the renowned musical theatre star offers a different side to the music that he is able to make – and he seems to be having a lot of fun in doing so.
Just like with his good friend Alfie Boe, Michael Ball is showcasing a different aspect and depth to his music with his latest album Glow.
Filled with plenty of fun, tracks such as ‘Best Night of Your Life’ and ‘Vintage’, both feel very celebratory in very individual ways. ‘Vintage’ in particular feels as though it encourages us all the embrace exactly where we are at this stage in life, which ‘Best Night of Your Life’ in ensuring that you make the most of every moment in life.
On the flip side of this, there is also plenty of retrospective feeling on display as well. This is particularly clear ion on ‘Remember to Remember’ which really comes across as a deeply personal song – expressed beautifully through the warmth of Ball’s vocals that urges us to hold on for long as possible the love that we have for someone who has passed away.
Every aspect to the way in which this album has been put together really offers something quite different to what we have come to expect from Michael Ball. While musically, there is still some of the theatricality that we have come to expect (‘On With the Show’ being a prime example of this), this is also a record that is has a deeply personal feel to it – as heard on songs such as ‘Holding on to Letting Go’ which in many ways is relatable. There is power and poignancy on display throughout.
Musically, there is a wide range of sounds that have been incorporated as possible and it is clear that with this album Michael Ball wants to offer a different perspective of himself and what what he has to offer – not simply as a well known musical theatre star (although of course this will remain a strong aspect as to how people know him). His risks and song choices really work on this album to make listeners and fans alike see him in a different way.
‘Glow’ is a record that is a pleasure to listen to at your leisure and with every listening you can take a different perspective on the songs. Immensely enjoyable from start to finish.
