The musical, featuring an original score by Sir Elton John and is based on the hit book and film, is now welcoming its third year cast. Here’s why you should strut your way to the Dominion theatre…
It is simply one of the most stylish shows in the West End at the moment:
When you are making a show that features fashion right at the very centre of the story, ensuring that it looks good and pays attention to detail is extremely important! Gregg Barnes has created such a wide range of costumes for all of the cast that are filled with plenty of glamour suitable for the world of Runway magazine. But equally there are hints of and touches to the film in certain aspects of Andy’s costumes for eagle eyed fans to pick up on – simply wonderful. Full credit to the backstage team who are also having to help the cast into their numerous costumes!
The sheer spectacle of it all:
Of course by this point in the run, you would expect The Devil Wears Prada to run as slick as possible, but even at this stage it is still as sleek and well put together as any fashionable outfit. Every scene moves seamlessly and there is plenty of dazzling moments along the way – including the scenes in Paris. There is plenty of spectacle on display from start to finish – with director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell really bringing out the the best of the cast. Routines for ‘Dress Your Way Up’ and ‘House of Miranda’ for example highlight the glamour and and spectacle of the fashion industry.
The cast:
Trying to make characters such as Miranda, Emily, Nigel and Andy all distinctive from the portrayal in the iconic film is no easy feat. However, Terri Hatcher, Taila Halford, Matt Henry and Jenna Bonner all do an extremely good job of making the audience engage with their characters. Hatcher is is a subtly biting Miranda, relishing every put down and pointed quip. Matt Henry is brilliant as the strikingly honest Nigel, Talia Halford does wonderfully well in her withering remarks as Emily and Jenna Bonner really blossoms as Andy grows in confidence. The ensemble surrounding them all ensure that the show goes without a hitch.
The humour:
For those who have read the book and seen the film, you know exactly what lines from have been kept, but the musical also has adapted and changed it to be more fitting for today’s audiences. Yet that doesn’t mean that it has lost the bite in the humour – it has just been reframed slightly. The wit is delicious and fits in perfectly with the story and characters as a whole with plenty of standout lines.
Nostalgia:
Whether it is little nods to the costume design from the film or iconic lines, it is clear there is plenty of nostalgia on display throughout for fans of the film and the book to enjoy. It is clear that great attention has been paid to ensure that the story is told how it deserves to be told.
The Devil Wears Prada is booking at the Dominion Theatre until the 25th September 2027.
