Review Round Up: She Loves Me, Menier Chocolate Factory

Matthew White directs this revival of the musical, featuring music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. But what have critics been saying about it?

she-loves-me

The Guardian: **** “It’s a show that gains from the intimacy of the Menier setting and the skilfulness of White’s staging.”

The Independent: ***** “Matthew White’s revival at the Menier delectably establishes that She Loves Me has its own distinctive virtues.”

British Theatre.com: *** “it’s all rather pretty and well-behaved and won’t do you any harm.  Nothing to be ashamed of, just don’t expect the earth to move.”

WhatsOnStage: ***** “it’s the kind of show you can watch at any time of year and emerge feeling goodwill to all men. Utterly heavenly.”

The Stage: ***** “Bock and Harnick’s musical masterpiece is a fragrant delight in every sense, and not just because the shop it is set in trades in perfume, and it is given the sweetest-looking and sounding production in town.”

The Times: **** “At first this production seems like the perfect chocolate box musical.”

Broadway World: **** “A swoon-worthy seasonal treat that captures the wonder and absurdity of love.”

The Financial Times: **** “All in all, the show comes up smelling of roses.”

The Telegraph: **** “Director Matthew White (with much ingenious choreographic input crammed into a confined space from Rebecca Howell) clearly adores the material – and there’s not a weak link in the cast.”

West End Whingers: “Matthew White’s production is a charmer from start to finish.”

Gay Times: “Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s creation, bursting to the brim with humour, joy and festive cheer, marks the Menier once again at bagging a cherishable hit!”

Time Out: *** “Matthew White’s gorgeously giftwrapped production.”

Musical Theatre Review: ***** “It possesses rare qualities of skill, taste (an old-fashioned virtue but apt in this instance) and humour, all of them honoured in this very touching treat.”

Evening Standard: ***** “This is surely bound for a West End transfer. Until then, it’s an early Christmas present of the best sort imaginable.”

West End Wilma: **** “The best way to describe it is a Christmas present-musical – shimmery on the outside, bowed up nicely but not quite sure what’s inside at first. Once opened, you can’t helped but be charmed and heart warmed by the sweetness inside.”
