Hilda is blind, lives alone, and is visited by a carer once a week. Camilla is a young offender looking for her next mark. A surprising and curious relationship sparks off between these opposites as both search for connection and purpose.

Writer Kate Lock said: “I met the real Hilda at a pensioner’s day centre. She was collecting windfalls to take home and make herself an apple crumble, completely blind. She lived completely independently. Her grit, humour and sense of self-worth were so inspiring, I felt compelled to write about her. Russian Dolls is her story.”

The play and its writer won the 2015 Adrian Pagan award for playwriting, which acknowledges the need for continued support of promising dramatists beyond their first production.

The cast includes Stephanie Fayerman as Hilda and Mollie Lambert as Camelia.

Russian Dolls is directed by Hamish MacDougall, designed by Becky-Dee Trevenen, lighting designed by Joshua Gadsby and sound designed by Max Pappenheim.

Russian Dolls is on at the King’s Head Theatre from the 5th to the 23rd April.
