The Broadway musical will transfer to the London theatre, following the announcement of the early closure of Show Boat.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit new Broadway musical is getting ready to rock London as it is confirmed that School of Rock will open for previews at the New London Theatre from the 24th October and officially opening on the 14th November 2016.
Although it was initially thought that the production would reside at the London Palladium later this year before being pushed back to 2017, this latest news follows the announcement of the early closure of Show Boat.
Based on the 2003 film starring Jack Black, the musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a supply teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight –A pupils into a mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?
The musical features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Julian Fellowes. School of Rock will be directed by Laurence Connor with choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter, set and costume designs by Anna Louizos, lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound design by Mick Potter.
Originally opening at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York, the musical began previews on 9 November,officially opening on 6 December 2015 to strong reviews. The production was recently nominated for Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Musical (Alex Brightman) at the Tony Awards.
Casting for the London production has yet to be announced.
