Currently appearing in the UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Joe McElderry has also found time to release this entertaining album full of songs from the movies.
As with so many artists during their career it is customary to release an album dedicated to new interpretations of classic songs from films and it seems that time has come for Joe McElderry.
Featuring songs from films such Armageddon, Dirty Dancing and Four Weddings and A Funeral, Saturday Night at the Movies despite picking from a variety of genres in terms of film, has a very romantic vibe to it – helped by Joe McElderry’s smooth vocals.
From opening with a very perky and enjoyable rendition of ‘Daydream Believer’, all the way through to the singer’s latest single ‘Gloria’, it is certainly an album that has plenty of charm about it – even if some of the arrangements perhaps come across as well as they could.
One such example is ‘Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’ – wonderfully sung but it feels, particularly in the higher section of the song, that musically McElderry is slightly overpowered by the strength of the music.
But for the most part, the album really plays to the singer’s vocal strengths as his performance of ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ really proves, making the most of the full range of his vocals from beginning to end.
Saturday Night at the Movies makes the most of the fact that McElderry is at his strongest when the arrangement is stripped back as is on ‘No Matter What’ and ‘If I Loved You’. In contrast to this, he is just lacking slightly in power and control when it comes to songs such as ‘Everything I do, I do it For You’.
However, there is no denying that this is an album that is plenty of fun to listen to from beginning to end, combining songs that will make you smile and sing along to, such as the title track and ‘I’m into Something Good’ as well as those which stirs the emotions. Fans will not be disappointed.
