Born with emerald-green skin, Elphaba is smart, fiery, misunderstood and possesses extraordinary talent. When circumstances force her to room with the bubbly blonde and exceptionally popular, Galinda, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships. This is the story of The Wizard of Oz reimagined.

Directed by Jon M. Chu (In the Heights), the film’s cast is led by Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, with Jonathan Bailey as  Fiyero. The cast also includes Ethan Slater as Boq, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard of Oz and Keala Settle as Miss Coddle.

As with the musical, the film is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It will feature many of the songs from the musical, which were written by Stephen Schwartz and a screenplay by Winnie Holzman who also wrote the book for the musical.
