Love London Love Culture’s Album Picks for 2023

There have been plenty of incredible albums released this year, here we take a look back at some of our favourites…

Trustfall – P!nk: much soul searching goes on on P!nk’s latest album which while still filled with catchy rhythms and choruses, this album definitely has a reflective vibe to it that makes it stand out. There is a gentleness that emerges – particularly on songs such as ‘Just Say I’m Sorry’, while ‘When I Get There’ is filled with poignancy, showing a different side to the singer – while there is still a vibrancy to songs such as ‘Trustfall’ and ‘Never Not Gonna Dance Again’. Once again she proves just how versatile she is!

Endless Summer Vacation, Miley Cyrus: while this album contains one of the most played songs of the year (‘Flowers’ just in case for some reason you missed it!), but actually this is an album that is filled with songs that bring together many of the different elements to her career together perfectly. Each song has plenty of expression and rawness to them including ‘You’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ that capture a softer side to her vocals. There are plenty of treats to be found on it and show a confidence in the music that she is looking to put out there – long may it continue!

Tension, Kylie Minogue: it has been a great year for female singers and Kylie has kept up with this trend with this dance infused album that feels very much a continuation of her previous album ‘Disco’ . Jam packed with songs that are guaranteed to get people on the dance floor, this is an album that oozes with style and confidence, with highlight songs including: ‘One More Time’ and ‘Green Light’ – perfect summer and party vibes throughout.

Queen of Me, Shania Twain: this is certainly one of the most uplifting and joyful albums of the year – as well as being a truly welcome back for Shania Twain who shows us all exactly what we have been missing with this record. It is certainly filled with surprises, with ‘Pretty Liar’ coming across as pretty gritty but enjoyable, while ‘Not Just a Girl’ brings to mind some of her earlier songs. There is certainly something for everyone on this album.

Power to Play, McFly: while is it fair to say McFly have always had a high energy level to their music which shows their passion, it feels as though they take it to another level with this latest album! This is particularly evident on tracks such as ‘Where Did All the Guitars Go?’ and ‘Shine On’. But it is also clear that more of the focus is on the strength of their musical abilities – not just vocals and shows how they have matured musically.

Love & Money, Katie Melua: if there is a singer whose vocals that are more soothing to listen to then it would be a very much a surprise. Melua’s latest album is simply exquisite in so many ways. She really knows how to tell a story through song and does it in a way that ensures that you don’t miss a single word. Particular highlights include: ‘Those Sweet Days’ and ‘First Dates’ .

This Life, Take That: once again taking their music in a new direction, Take That’s ninth album feels like a real showcase for their harmonies and showing them as a band entering a new era for their music in a pleasing way. Musically it constantly soars, while lyrically it is filled with hope and optimism. As well as the title track, stand out songs include: ‘Windows’ and ‘The Champion’.
